From the moment I walked into Dr. Bhatts Pompano office I felt a comfort. Dr. Bhatt is very accommodating. I told her that I was on a time-line as I would be gone for 1 month beginning on the 26th of July. Dr. Bhatt was able to fit me into her very tight schedule. Before I was brought into the er to have my Gallbladder removed, Dr. Bhatt came to me & assured me that everything would be okay. I would recommend her to anyone who needs their Gallbladder removed.

The best treatment I've received for my hemorrhoids issue from Dr. Bhatt in Pompano Beach Florida. Her team as well as her attitude, professionalism, care, and concern are really appreciated. She constantly asks me if I have any questions and sees me both before and after my colonoscopies and assured full care. She called me immediately to address my follow-up inquiry, which I really appreciated. She not only spared my life, but she also showed me such kindness and supported me at every turn. Her surgical skills are great, especially with Robotic Surgery and using the Minimally Invasive Surgery and she genuinely cares about her patients. The same people work for her. Everyone is there to support, assist, and go above and beyond to ensure you get what you need. I heartily endorse.

Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Astha clinic was extremely disappointing. From the moment I walked into the clinic, the service was subpar. The receptionist was rude and unhelpful, showing no interest in assisting me. Additionally, the wait time was excessive. I had to wait over an hour past my scheduled appointment time without any explanation or updates from the staff. When I was finally seen, the doctor seemed rushed and did not give adequate attention to my concerns, leaving me feeling undervalued and without clear answers. To make matters worse, the clinic's facilities were dirty and poorly maintained, which raised serious concerns about the hygiene of the place. The lack of professionalism and care for patients was evident in every aspect of my visit. I definitely would not recommend Dr. Astha Clinic to anyone and hope they can significantly improve their services and customer care in the future.

Understanding the Basic of Colon and Rectal Surgery

The words “colon” and “rectum” are combined to form the phrase “colorectal”. This phrase is frequently used to describe all lower digestive system organs, such as the small intestine, colon, rectum, anus, and pelvic floor.

Hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, cancer, and other disorders of the lower digestive tract can all be treated with a variety of surgical techniques that fall under the broad category of colon and rectal surgery. Robotic, laparoscopic, and minimally invasive treatments are available for a variety of surgeries.

Specialized training in the surgical management of disorders affecting the small bowel, colon, rectum, and anus has been completed by colorectal surgeons. Abdominal and anorectal surgery are the two main types of surgery.

Our doctors have received specialized training in the most recent methods for diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the colon and rectum. Among other diseases, we treat and relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids, fissures, diverticular disease, and polyps.

Conditions Handled:

  • Colorectal cancer: To remove cancerous tumors and surrounding tissue, surgery is frequently necessary.
  •  IBD: Severe cases of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis may require surgeries like colectomy, which involves removing all or a portion of the colon.
  • Diverticular Disease: Surgery may be required for complications including perforations, fistulas, or abscesses resulting from diverticular disease.
  • Benign Conditions: These include polyps that might need surgery, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures.

Types of Colon and Rectal Surgery Procedure

Colectomy

  • Complete Colectomy: Colon is removed in its entirety.
  • Partial Colectomy: A partial colonectomy involves removing a piece of the colon; this procedure is frequently used to treat diseases like diverticular disease, colorectal cancer, and IBD.

Colostomy and Ileostomy

  • Colostomy: The artificial creation of a stoma (opening) in the abdominal wall from a portion of the colon, typically the descending or sigmoid colon. Stool is frequently sent to a collection bag following a colectomy.
  • Ileostomy: Like colostomy, but with the small intestine (ileum) diverted; usually performed following the removal of the colon and rectum.

Rectal Resection:

  • Low Anterior Resection (LAR) is a procedure that involves removing a portion of the rectum and connecting the remaining rectum to the colon or anus. It is typically utilized for rectal tumors that are located lower in the rectum.
  • Abdominoperineal Resection (APR) involves removing the rectum and anus and creating a permanent colostomy. This operation is frequently required for malignancies adjacent to or affecting the anus.

Dr. Astha Bhatt is a highly skilled colon and rectal specialist surgeon in Broward County, Florida, and has been ranked #1 as the Top Surgeon in South Florida. She serves Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Coconut Creek, Coral Spring, and Plantation, FL, and specializes in robotic da Vinci technology. With her significant knowledge and expertise, she has played a critical role in expanding the application of this technology.

Hemorrhoidectomy

  • Hemorrhoids (enlarged veins in the anus or rectum) are surgically removed in severe cases that do not respond to nonsurgical therapy.

Transanal Resection

  • Transanal Excision (TAE) is a technique for removing early-stage rectal tumors or big polyps through the anus without making abdominal incisions, which is appropriate for lesions near the anus.

Proctocolectomy

  • The colon and rectum are often removed in severe cases of ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). This procedure typically includes the establishment of an ileostomy.

Fistulotomy and Fistulectomy

  • Surgical treatments for treating anal fistulas, which are abnormal connections between the rectum or anal canal and the skin surface surrounding the anus.

Laparoscopic and robotic surgeries

  • Many of the above procedures can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, which involve smaller incisions, reduced pain, faster recovery times, and fewer complications compared to traditional open surgery.

Stoma Reversal

  • Reversal of a colostomy or ileostomy to restore normal bowel function after the initial surgery has achieved its goals (such as removal of cancer or temporary diversion).

What is Robotic Colon and Rectal Surgery?

Robotic surgery refers to surgical treatments that use robotic technology, specifically the da Vinci Surgical System or comparable robotic platforms. This new technology enables surgeons to execute difficult colorectal treatments with more precision and control using small incisions, providing significant advantages over traditional open surgery and even conventional laparoscopic approaches.

Robotic System Overview

  • The da Vinci Surgical System consists of robotic arms outfitted with miniature surgical equipment and a high-definition 3D camera.
  • Surgeons operate these devices via a console, which displays a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the operating site.

Types of Robotic Procedures

  • Robotic Colectomy: The colon is removed partially or completely using robotic help. This is frequently done for illnesses such as colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Robotic colon rectum surgery allows for procedures such as low anterior resection or abdominoperineal resection for rectal malignancies and other rectal problems.
  • Robotic proctectomy is the removal of the rectum and anus, followed by the establishment of a permanent colostomy or ileostomy.

Overall, there is a significant improvement in the field of colorectal surgery, providing patients with the advantages of minimally invasive surgery while also improving precision and recuperation times. As technology advances, robotic platforms are projected to become increasingly significant in the treatment of colorectal illnesses.

Currently, the Da Vinci Robot (DVR) is the most extensively utilized platform for robot-assisted laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, providing more precision, better patient outcomes, and shorter recovery times. Patients in Broward County, Florida can access robotic technology thanks to excellent medical facilities and competent surgeons such as Dr. Astha Bhatt. Robotic colon rectum and anus surgery offers numerous advantages, including fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and speedier recovery.

Most intestinal surgeries can be performed using the laparoscopic or keyhole technique. These include surgery for

  • Improved outcomes: Patients frequently have shorter hospital stays and a faster return to routine activities.

The use of robotics in surgery benefits both the physician and the patients. It improves precision while allowing greater flexibility and control during the procedure.

Ongoing research and development aims to improve the robotic system’s capabilities, enabling for even more sophisticated and delicate surgeries to be conducted using minimally invasive approaches. Continued collaboration between surgeons like Dr. Astha Bhatt and engineers will surely result in additional advances in robotic-assisted surgery, helping patients in Broward County, Florida, and worldwide.
